Pauline Baynes, who has died aged 85, was a children's book illustrator perhaps best known for her illustrations for J R R Tolkien's The Hobbit.

She also illustrated seven volumes of C S Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, and countless other books.

In 1968, she won the Kate Greenaway Medal for her artwork for Grant Uden's A Dictionary Of Chivalry, and wrote and illustrated her own books as well.

One of her projects, a series of designs accompanying selections from the Koran, is scheduled for publication in 2009.
