SAN ANTONIO -- High-dose tamoxifen cari do double duty when used during in vitro fertilization cycles for breast cancer patients and survivors.
Moreover, the addition of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) can increase the number of embryos obtained during in vitro fertilization (IVF), Dr. Kutluk Oktay said at the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
"Tamoxifen has a dual purpose in simultaneously protecting the breast while also stimulating the ovaries. But the [average] number of embryos we can get with just tamoxifen alone is still less than two. If we combine the tamoxifen with FSH, we can double the number of embryos," said Dr. Oktay of Cornell University, New York.
Standard ovarian stimulation protocols for IVF are potentially risky in the context of breast cancer because of the possibility that high estrogen levels could trigger a recurrence of the disease.
Traditionally, natural IVF--in which the ovaries are not artificially stimulated--has been the only safe option for these patients, yielding low numbers of embryos.
More recently, Dr. Oktay and his associates have published data on 12 breast cancer patients who underwent IVF involving high-dose tamoxifen (40-60 mg for an average of 6.9 days beginning ...
