The Premier League clubs have decided that this season they will be allowed to name seven substitutes.

Why? Is it for the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal with their over-inflated squads so they can tell disgruntled superstars: "Hey, look! At least you are on the bench, not sitting in the stand." It seems to be yet another way of giving the richer clubs the edge. Those who can afford to have all that talent waiting in the wings will be able to replace playing positions with greater precision.
