New "super surgeries" will force patients in rural areas to travel further for treatment and will not ease pressure on hospitals, a new report warns today.
The major analysis of the Government's controversial plans for new polyclinics will come as a blow to Ministers, who are facing growing opposition.
Influential think-tank the King's Fund says there is no evidence larger GP practices deliver better care than smaller ones.
Its report comes as senior West MP Don Foster launched a survey on whether residents in Bath want a polyclinic.
Polyclinics are designed to bring together groups of GPs with a range of services, such as minor surgery, blood tests and X-rays, and Ministers have ordered all of England's 152 primary care trusts to introduce one in their area.
The Tories claim up to a fifth of GP surgeries in England were under threat from the scheme.
