Thousands of college staff, ranging from lecturers to cleaners, staged protests across the country yesterday ahead of crucial talks aimed at resolving a pay dispute.

Unions representing 250,000 lecturers, learning support staff, cleaners, managers, caterers, librarians, security and lab technicians are demanding a wage rise of six per cent, or GBP1,500, whichever is greater, and have rejected a 2.5 per cent offer.

Lunchtime protests and demonstrations were held outside further education colleges in the West by members of the University and College Union (UCU) and support staff with Unison. Students also gave their support at the walkout, which was planned for colleges throughout England, ahead of pay talks today.

Protests were staged at New College Swindon, City of Bristol College, and Gloucester College.

About 150 union members at City of Bath College are staging a rally tomorrow.

At the College Green site of City of Bristol College, staff gathered at the main entrance at lunchtime.
