(From Western Daily Press)
There is growing demand for improved rail transport.
Commuters are being encouraged to car-share and make more use of public transport, with the possibility of increased train capacity.
Suddenly, people are waking up to the fact that the car cannot supply all their transport needs. The Government has a GBP7 billion programme for road-building - mainly widening motorways including the M1 and M25.
Friends of the Earth estimate that, in three years of this, new road space would become as congested as before.
The same amount of money would make a major overhaul of both rail infrastructure and rolling stock possible, with cash to spare to cover operating costs enough to keep fares down - British railway fares are currently among the costliest in Europe.
However, Gordon Brown recently suggested that all rail passengers should bear an even bigger burden of the running costs.
