Now, a letter written by Lord Nelson to his friend in Bath has been uncovered, providing a fascinating insight into the master tactician who saved the nation.
And the previously unpublished letter from one of England's greatest naval leaders looks set to be sold for thousands of pounds when it comes up for auction later this month.
It was 18 months before the Battle of Trafalgar and Nelson wrote to his friend General William Villettes, from on board HMS Victory.
Villettes was a Bath-educated military man who wanted to know Nelson's assessment of the situation. The letter, brief and to the point, was signed "Nelson & Bronte", and dated "Victory, April 18th, 1804".
