(From Western Daily Press)
Residents adore living in the quiet village of Shortwood. They can see deer and hares in their gardens and have a community spirit that can be hard to find today.
But the tranquility of their South Gloucestershire haven was shattered last week when they learnt of proposals to build thousands of new homes that would engulf the village.
While the plans are in the very early stages, residents are keen to do whatever they can to get their voices heard and have launched a campaign to save their village.
A meeting was held in the local pub, The Bridge Inn, on Monday night when people met to discuss the far-reaching document.
They decided the best way forward would be to write letters to the council opposing the development of thousands more homes. Under South Gloucestershire Council's Core Strategy, the tiny village could be swallowed up as the authority strives to meet targets for affordable housing.
Northavon MP Steve Webb called a meeting last Friday to inform residents of the public consultation.
