I Feel I must take issue with the article, "BT set to hang up on red icon of British life" (June 2), which incorrectly claims red kiosks are facing extinction and that the phone-box cull is aimed specifically at rural villages.

Bt is, in fact, seeking to remove less than a quarter of unprofitable kiosks across the country, not just in rural villages.

We`re committed to meeting our obligation to provide a public payphone service, but demand for the service has fallen dramatically. Usage has halved in the last two years alone and more than 60 per cent of payphones are unprofitable. Where we no longer believe a kiosk is needed then we seek to remove it.
