Just once in a while it seems that the world moves rather faster than it ought to.

I was keeping one eye on the news of Ranulph Fiennes' bid to climb Everest, and rather enjoying the suspense.

He must know that at least half the thrill for us on the ground is wondering whether he will get there or not, or get back at all, or even speculating on how many more fingers he might lose to frostbite.

Then, in a second, without a huge amount of warning, it was all over - he'd had to turn back, and it was flashed up on Teletext on my television alongside some dreary story about planning applications and just a few clicks of the remote away from some celebrity tittle tattle and the racing ...
