Many publisher methods books include performance books to help broaden the level of training that students receive. Alfred Publishing has now developed artistic performance books "designed to teach students the skills that will transform average performances into polished, artistic ones." Keys to Artistic Performance is a compilation of repertoire for intermediate instruction but with the added feature of an intentional discussion of the qualities needed to achieve such performances. The use of "five keys" to describe these qualities is a creative approach to help "inspire imaginative performance" as students develop a mastery of color, pedaling, rubato, characterization and choreography.
