Eric Baumgartner's 7 Folk Songs are musical theater-type arrangements with jazzy elements. The accompanying CD has two versions of each, one with piano, one without. The MIDI tracks, with nice details including pitch bends, shakes and falls, are fun to play with. Any cheesy sounding brass ensemble parts are, thankfully, staccato. Cymbals on regular pulses were a bit oppressive in the ballads, but most often the drums are clean, authentic and stylistically consistent. My favorite of the bunch is "The Erie Canal." Like the others, it relies heavily on a solid left-hand bass and absolute secure rhythm, but it's cute and, with the CD, quite impressive.
It's important to say that these pieces, while jazzy, are not really "jazz piano solos." The bass lines are similar to those a jazz pianist might play, but the arrangements lack the variety of chord voicings ...
