Hard-pressed shoppers are staying away from out-of-town shopping centres as a result of the soaring cost of petrol - according to research published today.

The statistics published by Experian found that trade in retail parks such as Cribbs Causeway near Bristol has fallen by almost six per cent in the West Country over the past 12 months.
The news has come just a week after John Lewis announced that sales in its store in The Mall had dropped off by 16.3 per cent.
As reported in the Western Daily Press the chain blamed the rising cost of petrol and diesel for the fact that its biggest shop in the region is also the worst performing in the country.
According to the Experian research out-of-town retail destinations suffered a 5.8 per cent fall in visitors compared with a 1.5 per cent fall in those using town centres to shop.
