Nature offers free deposits

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is to deposit papers in open access repositories PubMed Central and UK PubMed Central on behalf of authors free of charge. It has also promised to deposit the papers in institutional repositories.

The move comes as an increasing number of authors have to meet the open access policies of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), which have ruled that research funded by them must be made open access.

NPG said it was proud to be the first commercial subscription publisher to commit to deposit in institutional repositories, although it is at a very early stage with this.

repository investigation

David Hoole, head of content licensing and brand marketing at NPG, said: "Our primary focus is getting the deposit into PubMed Central and UK PubMed Central running smoothly for as many NPG journals as possible. We're at the very early stages of investigating deposit in other institutional repositories.
