Industry growth tarnished by the weakness of news
Michelle Perry
Annual growth of 4.5% will push revenues for the global information industry up to $466bn in under three years, but performance of news providers has slowed growth, according to a new study.
Despite the turmoil in the financial markets and a contracting news segment, research company Outsell predicts a compound annual growth rate of 4.5% between 2008 and 2011.
But the poor performance of news providers and publishers, which together account for more than a third of the total information industry, forced Outsell to revise last year's growth forecast downwards.
"We believe 2008 and 2009 will be the 'trough years' rather than just one year: 2007," said Outsell.
But business news providers said that they had seen no signs of slower growth.
