On the last day of May, the Buddha family, who were recent transplants from Boston, went to a pool party at the home of Vince Vellucci of Fayetteville, Georgia. Velluci's grandson, Haden Stusak, six, and the Buddha's son, Josiah, five, were friends.
Josiah decided to take off the water wings that supported him, in an effort to join the other kids in the end of the pool that was eight-feet deep. Unfortunately, Josiah could not swim well enough to stay afloat, and he slipped beneath the water. No one seemed to notice.
No one, that is, except Josiah's friend, Haden. The boy noticed a shadow on the floor of the pool, so he put on his swim goggles and swam down to investigate. Though only six, Haden has been swimming for three years.
"I saw my friend on the bottom," Haden told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on June 4. "He was on his back, his eyes were open and he was shaking."
