Current, retired and next-generation presidents at the ACE/OWHE Summit for Women Presidents in Milwaukee in June shared strategies to advance women into presidencies and support them after they get there.
Translating the search process
Nuances are very important in the search process, where the language and paradigms are based on white males. Women need to understand and translate them.
* Serve on a presidential search committee to learn about the process and gain a perspective.
* Apply for a job to learn the ropes. Once you're a candidate, you can ask for confidential mentoring and guidance from the search consultant. Your odds of success rise after you've gone through it once. Don't stop trying.
* Schedule presentations by search firms at state network conferences. Choose firms with higher education experience, a different one each year. Bit by bit you'll get to know them.
* Understand that search firms, like real estate agents, work for the one who pays them--the college or university. "They're not your best friend," warned Cynthia Forrest, editor of the ACE Network News.
