The social set zooms in on a new ride.
In this country, where status historically has been measured by how much space you take up at home and on the road, "Small is the new big" is some kind of revolution in motion. Celebrities, naturally, are hopping onboard-- George Clooney with his two-seat electric Tango, for instance. Now the trend enters the social set, led by Lauren Santo Domingo, who recently took possession of her groovy Smart ForTwo car. Getting about 40 mpg, the wee car (just under nine feet long), produced by Mercedes since 1998, is now available in the United States with waiting lists of one year.
