A new report highlights the lack of modern legislation regulating Ireland's booming gaming sector, writes Louise Hodgson.
In 1972, the World Series of Poker, which was in its second year at the time, had only eight entrants. In 1982, 100 people entered the Las Vegas-based competition, and in 1991, this figure doubled. This year, the World Series consisted of 55 events and attracted thousands of players, all of whom pay a $10,000 entry fee. This illustrates the recent and rapid rise in popularity of the game, specifically Texas Hold'em, as well as the money involved in the pastime.
