Shortly after Russia invaded Georgia and Azerbaijan diverted a major part of its crude oil exports to Russia's Black Sea terminals, Gazprom on Aug. 14 began an offensive by offering to buy all the natural gas being produced by the Caspian countries including Iran and Azerbaijan. The latter move made clear that the Russian incursion into Georgia was partly, if not totally, under a wide-ranging plan to secure the country's place as Europe's energy king-pin.
