A growing number of children in Minnesota are being exposed to hazardous clandestine labs that produce methamphetamine, according to a new Hazelden Foundation report on drug abuse trends re leased last month.
At least 57 children were exposed to methamphetamine labs in Minnesota last year, compared with only 11 a year earlier. Of the 57 (including two fatalities), almost all (47) resided in a home with an operational methamphetamine lab.
The health and safety of people living with methamphetamine labs is jeopardized because of exposure to the chemical gases, fumes, and byproducts, and the risk of sudden explosions, chemical burns and fires.
Young children are particularly susceptible to the dangers of prolonged exposure, even to relatively small amounts, since their bodies are not as efficient as adults in metabolizingtoxins. In addition, their daily needs are often not met when they are under the care of a…
