A lesbian couple is suing Mesa College CA after the school fired them from its athletics department just one month after a newspaper article had identified them as lesbians.

Lorri Sulpizio, the former women's basketball coach, and Cathy Bass, director of basketball operations, were both fired within a day of each other in April 2007 after nearly a decade with the college. They are registered domestic partners with three children.

Their sexual orientation discrimination suit also claims that the women were retaliated against for asking that female athletes receive facilities equal to their male counterparts.

Athletics director Dave Evans allegedly conducted an "investigation" into Sulpizio's sexual orientation in 1999, and pressed her to identify other gay coaches. She refused. In 2003 he ruled that athletes could no longer share beds on road trips, a common money-saving practice at Mesa and most other collegiate athletic programs.
