WITH FUEL ECONOMY becoming increasingly important for car shoppers these days, automakers are scrambling to bring more efficient vehicles to showrooms. They include versatile small cars, new hybrids, wagons, hatchbacks, and small, car-based SUVs, sometimes called crossovers. Here's a look at notable new models you'll be seeing this fall or early next year. Watch for full test reports in future issues. For a list of forthcoming hybrids, see page 40.

Acura TL
On sale: fall 2008
Redesigned for 2009, Acura's upscale sedan is now taller, wider, and some six inches longer with a more spacious interior. The base model gets a power increase with a 280-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine that Acura says is capable of 26 mpg on the highway. A performance-oriented, all-wheel-drive version is powered by a 305-hp, 3.7-liter V6. Both get a five-speed automatic transmission and a new electrically assisted steering system that helps reduce fuel usage by eliminating engine drag from the steering pump. An optional technology package includes a voice-command navigation system, with traoc and weather reporting.

Bottom line. The outgoing TL has been one of our top-rated sedans. But since it was EPA rated at 28 mpg on the highway, the new model's 26 mpg figure is a step in the wrong direction.
