Cordless models continue to improve, thanks to technologies such as Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. In our tests, DECT phones delivered much longer talk time on a charge. And interference with other devices isn't a problem because those phones use the 1.9-gigahertz (GHz) band. Other devices such as Wi-Fi networks use 2.4- and 5.8 GHz frequencies.
If interference isn't a concern, you can still find phones that use older, analog technology for as little as $20. Those tend to have better voice quality than digital models.
Best for small homes:
A1 VTech $40
A3 VTech $20 CR Best Buy
B4 Uniden $60
These come with only one or two handsets and cannot be expanded. The A1 uses DECT technology and includes a voice-mail indicator and multilingual menus. The analog A3 has excellent voice quality but a short range. In addition to its cordless handset, the B4 has a corded phone to keep you connected during power outages.
