Campaigners handed in a petition with 4,380 signatures opposing Royal Mail's plans to close post offices across South Yorkshire.The Green Party called for a emergency debate but the Lib Dems refused because the issue has already been discussed three times at council meetings.Back in May, the Lib Dems asked chief executive John Mothersole to look into what powers the council had to stop closures.And council leader Paul Scriven said until a list of the threatened post offices was released on Tuesday, there was nothing more to say.Matthew Bartholomew, who handed in the petition, said: "The post office closures will be announced when the council is in recess so I am asking you to examine all the possible ways that as a council you can intervene to keep them open and operable."Now is the time for action. I am asking councillors to climb down from their moral highground and to turn grand vote grabbing words into deeds and to have less hot air and bluster and do something."Green councillor Bernard Little said there should have been a debate."Closing down a debate is outrageous.
