Reading your article about producing hydro electricity on the River Soar (Mercury, August 27), I thought the following might be of interest.
In the late 1940s, after my father-in-law had bought the old Mill House property, with what remained of the old water mill, at Mountsorrel, he had the idea of using the water wheels to generate some electricity, as everyone was suffering power cuts.
He found a Scottish consulting engineer, who came to see the site and said that, if the wheels were removed and a proper turbine put in place, there would be sufficient power to produce about 9KW of electricity.
A supplier, Gilks and Gordon, was found in the Lake District, which gave an estimate of about GBP4,000, a huge sum for what would have been a very small return.
