Delicious gossip doesn't have to be devilish. Liz Smith, gossip columnist for the New York Post and author of Dishing (Simon & Schuster), explains how to spice up conversation without growing horns:
GET THEIR ATTENTION. Start off in a lively way. "If you say, 'Hello, you're looking well. Isn't this lovely weather?' then you're a social bore," Smith says. "If you say, 'Let me tell you a story you're not going to believe,' you'll be unforgettable."
MAINTAIN YOUR COOL. "My tone is always fairly sardonic but benign," Smith says. "Generally, don't take yourself--or the gossip--too seriously."
MAKE IT SNAPPY. People have short attention spans, so don't take too long to get to the point. "Of ...
