A different kind of Stockholm syndrome is setting in Stateside. Jane Herman investigates.
On the way to the baggage claim in Terminal 5 at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, there is a passageway wallpapered with billboard-size photos of celebrated Swedes. It's called the Stockholm Hall of Fame, and honored here are the country's pride--Her Majesty Queen Silvia, Alfred Nobel, Bjorn Borg, and Greta Garbo. ABBA, too, is part of this welcoming committee, as are Olympic gold medalists and many more national treasures who, if you're not Scandinavian, might seem totally obscure (handball prodigy Staffan Olsson? Pop singer ...
