Byline: Jeffrey Slonim PHOTOGRAPHED BY PATRICK McMULLAN
The Internet is a minefield for sensitive celebrities, rife with nasty rumors and unflattering paparazzi shots. But where else does one turn for a last-minute recipe, movie times, or porn? We asked stars at a Vanity Fair party for the Tribeca Film Festival and at benefits for New Yorkers for Children and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation what they had Googled recently.
Many celebrities went in search of practical information. Meryl Streep looked up "the weather in London. I'm going tomorrow." "I'm Googling cars," said Carson Kressley. "I need a new one. I want some sort of hybrid with panache."
Others needed to brush up on their history. After watching the HBO miniseries about John Adams, Salt-N-Pepa's Cheryl James said she "wanted to know if John Quincy Adams was his son--and he was!" Malin Akerman did a bit of research on the Kyoto Protocol: "I was watching a documentary, and I wanted to get caught up."
And some stars even admitted to doing the odd background check. Said Elizabeth Hurley: "I Google everyone I like and everyone I dislike."
