An Interview With Alessandro Mitrotti
Mitrotti is the owner of Rag Nation, a consignment store in New York City.
Your designer pieces still have value, even if you no longer wear them.
Your designer pieces may still have value, even if you no longer wear them. If you have the time, use eBay; you'll pocket all the profits. But if you're willing to share the proceeds, a consignment store is usually a much easier solution.
Find your target. The best way to locate reliable consignment stores is word of mouth--ask your vintage-loving friends where they go. Once you have a list of places, call ahead. Find out what they will take, what designers they like, whether they have rules against minor stains, and if they won't touch anything more than three seasons old. Ask what percentage of the sale they'll keep--most keep 50 percent, but some places demand as much as 60. It's also a good idea to ask whether they'll donate unsold items or return them to you.
