So long, pastels. How to wear this season's dark florals.
Although Charles Baudelaire wrote Les Fleurs du Mal in 1857, his defussing of flowers feels especially relevant right now. This season, buds and blooms dominated the runways, but there wasn't a sweet pansy in sight. "Fall's florals are somber and mysterious--definitely not sugary and naive," says designer Derek Lam. The muted shades of eggplant, midnight blue, burnt orange, and brick red looked ominous, as though a dark cloud had blown over a garden--yet they also managed to be moodily romantic. At Michael Kors, shown here, a floral-print skirt was spun from colors typically found in foliage and was combined with a fur stole, embossed-leather pumps, and a trilby hat. The effect was polished and ladylike--not goth, not granny, and certainly not flower-child. To successfully wear this trend, choose just one print and the right accessories, and keep the rest of your outfit neutral. Lam offers a few final words of advice, especially for those who thought florals had long disappeared: "Be brave and make it bold."
