After the summer holidays and when the backpackers have flown home, Europeans from Iceland to the Ukraine celebrate their own histories. European Heritage Days, which became a joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Commission in 1999, take place in all fortynine signatory states to the Council of European Cultural Convention each September.
