On May 20, Knoxville, Tennessee, police officer Norman Rickman responded to a burglary alarm at a city home. While attempting to apprehend a suspect, the officer was shot.

Meanwhile, across the street, Tim Hall, who is a registered nurse, heard the shot and called 911 before rushing to the scene to see if he could render assistance. This took considerable courage, since Hall had seen the suspected burglar--still carrying a weapon--fleeing the area on foot. He had no idea if other armed robbers might still be in the neighborhood.
