On May 19, Ryan Tyler, a 10-year-old fifth grader at Maplewood Elementary School in Puyallup, Washington, was eating lunch in the school cafeteria when he noticed that a classmate seemed to be in trouble.
The classmate, whose name is Brandon, later told his side of the story to KING 5 News (Seattle): "When I was eating [my hamburger], I started choking on it. I tried to swallow it or puke it out but it just wouldn't come out. It felt like I didn't have any air at all. My face felt like it was burning up."
As Ryan described Brandon: "His face ... started to turn purple and blue."
Without giving the situation much thought, Ryan quickly ran to help Brandon, wrapping his arms around his classmate to perform the Heimlich Maneuver. He pushed twice and the stuck piece of food was expelled.
