If you want a car with great gas mileage and must make every dollar count, this list shows recommended cars with the lowest price per mpg. To create it, we divided the overall mpg for each vehicle we've recently tested by the price we paid for it. We limited the list to cars with an excellent owner-cost rating for the first five years, so their cost will probably stay low over time.

The Toyota Yaris hatchback with manual transmission had the lowest price per mpg ($370), but its overall test score was too low for it to be recommended. At the other extreme are the Dodge Viper SRT10 and Mercedes-Benz SL550-more than $6,000 for each mpg.
