Community concerns and the vagaries of the marketplace have prompted the Port of Everett, Wash., to scale down a plan to build a 1 million TEU-capacity container terminal.
"We're backing off from the 'mega-port' approach we had originally proposed," said Lisa Mandt, communications administrator for the port, located about 25 miles north of Seattle.
When the planning started in 2006, "the container trade was strong and we looked at ways to attract business to Everett," she explained. The idea was to expand from the port's South Terminal to Pier 1 with a new container facility and adjacent intermodal yard.
