Byline: Danielle Pergament
His approach to color has stayed consistent: "Natural, but with a kick--like hair color on MSG."
Kim Vo's life story seems straight out of an Oliver Stone movie: "I was born in Saigon in 1970," he says. "We escaped in the 1975 evacuation, in the middle of the night. It was pretty traumatic."
Vo and his parents landed in Sacramento, California. "All I did was watch The Dukes of Hazzard and Wonder Woman to try to learn English," he says. He went to beauty school partly because "I figured no one would care that I didn't speak English well if their highlights were pretty."
Now, Vo has his own line of hair products, three salons, an annoying waiting list, and celebrity clients galore. He has become a star in his own right on the small screen as a judge on Bravo's Shear Genius. Through it all, his approach to color has stayed consistent: "Natural, but with a kick--like hair color on MSG," he says. "It's a shout-out to my Asian roots."
The Hit List
