An Interview with Mark Starr
Starr is the national sports correspondent for Newsweek. This summer will be his tenth trip to the Olympics.
Despite all the hype, I love the Olympics for those moments that transcend any one sport. In Sydney, for instance, the two Korean Olympic teams walked together under the same flag in a gesture of peace. Here's what I'm looking forward to in Beijing:
Catch it live. Because of the time change, most of the competition will take place when Americans are sleeping or working. However, several of the most popular sports, including swimming and gymnastics, will have morning finals--which is very unusual--and will air live during prime time. NBC used its economic clout to ensure that Americans could watch the most popular events as they unfold.
Root for the old-timers. Several veteran athletes are poised to make history at the games. Despite a hand injury, Paul Hamm is aiming for Beijing. He was the gymnast who won the all-around in Athens, but his victory was marred by a scoring controversy; it'll be interesting to see if he can put those doubts to rest.
