If the word "beer" still conjures up images of frat parties, it may be time to reconsider. We asked brew aficionados for the golden rules of choosing the right beer (and not one of them told us to chug).
Red or white. Use your preference for wine to guide your choices. "Lagers are clean, crisp beers. They're drier and are served cold, like a white wine," says Joe Carroll, co-owner of Spuyten Duyvil, a beer bar in Brooklyn. "Ales are richer, fruitier, and fuller-bodied, like a red wine." He swears by Brooklyn Lager and Lees Harvest Ale.
