The flowers you send are a reflection of your own taste and style, so don't just leave it up to the person who answers the phone. To start with, steer clear of carnations, birds of paradise, and any gimmicky accessories.
Know where to dig. To find a good florist in another city, call the best hotel in the area and ask the concierge for a recommendation. Before trying someone new, ask for the shop's website and see if their aesthetic measures up. The best florists use top-quality blooms that change seasonally, so if it's summer and they're not stocking sweet peas or ranunculus, you probably aren't in good hands.
Narrow your focus. Orchids feel luxurious, and they really last. There are also many varieties of tulips ('Parrot' and 'Fringe' are two favorites) that are available pretty much year-round.
