MANILA, Sep 1 Asia Pulse - Philippines Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. on Sunday asked the foreign mining firms to observe preservation and protection of the environment while performing mining operations in the country.
Sen. Pimentel said, there are mining firms "that come here and scour the mountains for gold, copper, nickel, and other mineral but they do not care about the preservation of ecological balance to the detriment of the people.
" We must insist that the best international practices that those mining companies now operation in the Philippines observe in the own homegrounds should also be followed here," Pimentel added.
The lawmaker claimed, mining firm in Rapu-rapu island was forced to stop copper mining operations due to mine tailings that cause water pollution in the island.
He added, an Australian firm in Nueva Vizcaya has run into serious problem due to conflict with local government officials.
