CANBERRA, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - A push to slap an extra tax on "gas-guzzler" cars is gaining momentum.
The federal government wants to increase the luxury car tax - from 25 per cent to 33 per cent - on vehicles worth more than ,180 ($US48,934.64), but is facing a opposition in the Senate, where it does not hold a majority.
The coalition says it will not support any tax increase on luxury cars while the Greens, who hold five of the seven the balance of power votes in the upper house, want it imposed on high-emission vehicles.
The luxury car tax is scheduled for debate in the Senate today, where it could be in for a rough ride.
