Four models at different stages of life reveal how their personal styles have evolved over time.

A wardrobe of crisp white shirts and classic jeans perfectly suits this 38-year-old all-American beauty.
When I was younger, I thought grungy plaid shirts accented with lots of jewelry were cute. My husband [John Mellencamp] used to say I looked like a Christmas tree. At 38, I finally know what I like, and have the maturity to recognize that a skinny jean is not worth forcing. Living in Indiana, I do wear a lot of denim--classic labels like Levi's and Earnest Sewn . A white shirt is my staple; I have a lot, especially Theory and Brooks Brothers, as well as tons of Indian print skirts that I find in thrift shops--they always go with a white shirt, of course!
My closet isn't as diverse as I'd like, but I've stopped buying fussy things I'll wear only once. Now it's no to anything that requires parts to make it work; inevitably, I'm foraging at the bottom of my drawers for the one thing that's supposed to tie the look together. I used to have clothes that needed a story, like "It's the perfect sweater for walking on the beach on a chilly day when you just want to throw something over your bathing suit." It finally dawned on me that if I needed multiple sentences to explain why and where to wear something, I probably didn't need it.
With two boys [Hud, thirteen, and Speck, twelve], my clothes have to have versatility. I don't walk around in sweatpants all the time, but it makes sense to be comfortable when I'm doing regular-life things like going to my kids' football games. It's a funny spot to be in--looking put together but casual and dressing appropriately for my age. An ideal look is a simple high-waisted, wide-legged pant by a traditional, elegant American designer like Michael Kors or Ralph Lauren with a beautiful Hermes or Thomas Wylde bag. The only thing is, when I open my fabulous purse these days, there are tons of lollipops inside. -- AS TO ALEXANDRA MACK
