Before you buy a shower cleaner, decide what type of cleaner you are. Are you a daily scrubber, or do you wait a week or two between wipedowns? In general, our tests revealed that most trigger sprays and pumps can prevent scum and mildew if used every day. Powders with bleach are the choice for occasional removal of built-up tough stuff. Aerosol foams were least effective overall.

We followed each product's general cleaning instructions (not those for tougher specific tasks). Here's what we found:
Best for occasional wipedowns. The Comet and Ajax powders in the Ratings excelled at removing established mildew, and they left no streaks.
Best for compulsive cleaners. When used every day, Kaboom trigger-spray cleaner stopped mildew and soap scum from forming in the first place.
