Starbucks opened its first store in 1971 in the Pike Place Market in Seattle. Since then it has become the big coffee shop on the block (in some towns, almost every block). But others are catching up. In March, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, seeing, um, grounds for concern, reportedly vowed to fight to keep his company's position.

The first round of that fight has involved introducing a new daily brew, Pike Place Roast, in April. Starbucks says that Pike Place is "our smoothest coffee ever" and is made from beans that are freshly ground and brewed every 30 minutes. It's sold alongside the chain's traditional "morning ...
