Dear Andy,
In recent months, my department has become busier and busier, and we rely on our top performers more than we ever did before. I know they have other attractive opportunities in our area and I am concerned about losing them to a better offer. Are there any particular red flags I should look for that could mean some of my staff members are thinking of leaving?

It's not surprising that your group is busier than ever. Credit and collections professionals remain in strong demand as companies work through customer issues related to the credit crunch and current economic conditions. Fortunately, yes, there are some warning signs you can watch for to identify staff that may be currently job hunting:
* Increased absenteeism. Keep an eye out for patterns of increased absences, such as shorter workdays, longer lunches or calling in sick more often. This could indicate the time is being spent on other pursuits, including job interviews.
* Tardiness. Once-prompt staff members who consistently show up an hour late every day are sending a powerful message--they don't want to come to work anymore.
* Missed deadlines and increased errors. A former star on your team who suddenly struggles to meet deadlines or whose work is now filled with mistakes is likely preoccupied with something else. Of course, this behavior could be caused by personal problems, but it also can point to an impending departure.
