Art and politics

Two exhibitions this summer highlight some of the myriad ways art and politics impacted each other in the United States during the twentieth century. At the Wolfsonian in Florida, A Bittersweet Decade: The New Deal in America, 1933-1943 considers the effects of the government's patronage of art, design, and architecture through Fraklin Dealno Roosevelt's New Deal programs. The alphabet soup of initiatives-the WPA FAP SPS, SEA, and FSA, among them--not only supported artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Stuart Davis, Rockwell Kent, and Jacob Lawrence by commissioning paintings, sculpture, print designs, murals, and photographs but also led to some ...
