Allowing new parents to stop the tenure clock is now the second most common family-friendly benefit in higher education, behind maternity leave, according to a new survey from the Center for the Education of Women at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
The center conducted surveys at 189 schools on family-friendly policies from 2002-2007. Among its findings:
* 90% of major research universities have a formal policy for new parents and the tenure clock, compared with 50% of liberal arts colleges.
* 78% of schools have formal, university-wide policies for paid pregnancy leave.
* 65% of schools allow new parents to stop the tenure clock, typically for a year.
* 47% of schools have policies allowing faculty to phase into retirement.
