Fresno State University has settled another gender-discrimination complaint, this one with softball coach Margie Wright for $605,000.
Wright had filed a complaint with the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights charging retaliation by Fresno after she sought equal treatment for its female athletes. She stopped short of suing the school.
Her lawyer, Dan Siegel, said Wright was also concerned that her salary was not "similarly situated" to male coaches at Fresno. He also noted her concerns were "nearly identical" to those of former volleyball coach Lindy Vivas and former associate AD Diane Milutinovich, who both filed multi-million dollar lawsuits against the school.
Wright leads NCAA Division I softball coaches with more than 1,300 career wins. Her 1998 team won the school's first Division I team championship. "I'm sure [Fresno State] didn't want to be in litigation with such a popular and successful and highly respected coach," said Siegel.
