Southwest Landscapes, a duet recital suite, was commissioned by the Phoenix Music Teachers Association for their upcoming 57th Annual Piano Ensemble in 2009. These three pieces are very suitable for intermediate-level performers.

The first piece, "Colorado River Rapids," is swiftly moving in E minor. The secondo part opens with left-hand eighth notes that give the feel of the river rapids in motion. The primo states a majestic melody that captures the character of the great Colorado River. Both parts require an octave reach and use a complete array of triads in every inversion. This gives a very full and satisfying sound throughout the piece. Dynamics range from piano to fortissimo. Articulation is mostly legato with several accents and rare use of staccato.
